Thesis Project

FerroFluid, Electromagnets and Sound

Electromagnets used to manipulate FerroFluid with sound

Prototype

I started by deconstructing a speaker to see and understand how it works and what the basic components were.

Once I understood what a speaker was and what components I needed I built a prototype (video to the left).

Final Design

For my final design I used a doughnut shaped magnet with the electromagnet in the center surrounded by iron pieces.

The electromagnet was hooked up to an amplifier to produce the sound and to manipulate the magnetic FerroFluid.

You can “see” the magnetic field changing based on the sound in the FerroFluid. (video to the left)

Testing with Paint

I decided to add paint to the FerroFluid so that it would be easier to see the changing magnetic fields.
